1. Navigation
It is every hiker’s fear to get lost in the backcountry. One way to avoid facing this fear is to always have at least 1, but preferably 2 or more methods of navigation to help you keep track of your whereabouts. A map, compass, or GPS system are typical forms of navigation that a hiker might carry.
Whichever method(s) you choose to bring with you, make sure you have a good understanding of how to use it. These tools are only helpful when the person using them knows what they are doing.
Below are some of our favorite navigation items that we carry.

2. Sun Protection
This is one of the 10 essentials for hiking and backpacking that is unfortunately often overlooked. Caring for your skin and keeping yourself protected from the sun is incredibly important. When you spend all day outside, you are subjecting your body to a lot of exposure to UV light, which can have a ton of harmful effects.

3. First Aid
A first aid kit is one of the few things on your packing list that you hope to not get much use out of. Regardless of how often you take things out of it, you should regularly check over the items you have in it. If you or someone in your group gets injured while backpacking, you are far from medical attention. You need to be able to address any wounds while out in the woods, even if it is only a temporary fix until you can get help.

4. Extra Clothes
You never know what nature is going to throw at you, which is why extra layers and clothing is one of the 10 essentials for hiking and backpacking.
You need to be prepared for changing weather conditions. When packing, pack as if you expect to encounter the most extreme conditions the area might throw at you. While this might add some weight to your pack you will be grateful for the insulation if the temperatures dip or it starts to storm.

5. Knife
Knives are versatile tools that can be used for a wide range of tasks on the trail. You can use it for cutting items such as rope or fabric. Knives can be used for first aid purposes or for food preparation. They might also be useful for repairing gear, creating a shelter, and building a fire.
The many uses of knives make them important tools for every backpacker and hiker to have on deck. However, not every knife is suitable for hiking and backpacking. A good hiking knife should be lightweight, durable, and have a sharp blade. Below are some of our favorites.

6. Flashlight/Headlamp
While many of the animals with us in the backcountry have no issue navigating the forest at night, humans aren’t so fortunate. Our night vision is far inferior, which is why we need tools to help illuminate our path once the sun goes down.
No matter what time of day you are hiking, you should always carry a flashlight or headlamp just in case the sun sets before your hike ends. When backpacking, a headlamp is necessary for moving around a campsite in the evening. Without a source of light, you can easily hurt yourself or get lost due to the lack of visibility of your surroundings.
Be sure to also bring extra batteries!
7. Fire
Fire is considered one of the 10 essentials for hiking and backpacking because it is an important tool for survival and can be used in a variety of ways on the trail. A key use for fire is warmth. When the temperatures dip down, sitting near a fire can keep you warm and prevent hypothermia in wet or cold conditions. Fire can also be used for cooking and for purifying water for drinking. Another great use for fire is for signaling for help in an emergency situation.
Always carry something that can help you build a fire in the backcountry. That can be a lighter, some waterproof matches, or fire starter kits. Just make sure to maintain a safe fire and properly extinguish it when you are finished.
8. Shelter
On many wilderness survival shows such as Alone, one of the first things people do is build a shelter. That’s because it is incredibly important to protect yourself from weather and exposure to the elements. It also provides a comfortable place to rest and sleep.
There are many types of shelters available for hikers and backpackers, including tents, hammocks, bivy sacks, and tarps. A good shelter should provide adequate protection from the elements, be easy to set up and take down, and be durable enough to withstand the rigors of the trail.

9. Food
Always bring more than enough food on your hiking and backpacking trips. We suggest bringing at least an extra day’s supply of food, ideally consisting of items that have good nutritional value and don’t require cooking. While it can save space and weight to pack only the amount of food you need for your trip, it can put you in a bad situation if your trip doesn’t go according to plan.
10. Hydration
Water is arguably one of the most important of the 10 essential items for hiking and backpacking. If you are being active outside, you should be drinking plenty of water. You should be drinking it before you need it.
Dehydration is incredibly dangerous, so it is imperative to stay ahead of it. Make sure to always have a good stock of water, especially if you are in an area where water sources are scarce.
Along with your typical water filter system, bring along back up items to help assure you will have access to clean water in an emergency. Items like water purification tablets, emergency water pouches, and electrolyte tablets can be life savers.
